11 Tips For Healthy Hair During the Winter

Winter is here and with that comes chilly temperatures, harsh winds and dry air. While we know that these conditions can wreak havoc on our skin, we might not realize that they are also wreaking havoc on our hair. Protecting our hair is just as important as protecting our skin, especially against the tough elements of the winter conditions.

11 Tips For Healthy Hair During the Winter

Here are some tips for healthy hair this winter:

1) Eliminating hot showers

A long hot shower on a cold day may seem like the greatest treat, but it can actually be damaging to your locks. Long exposure to hot water can strip moisture from your hair, causing frizz and damage. Stick to warm or lukewarm water for 10 minutes or less to ensure you’re keeping your hair healthy.

2) Itchy Dry Scalp

A dry, flaky scalp can be an uncomfortable side effect of the dry winter air. In order to prevent dandruff, take cooler and quicker showers so that the scalp is only exposed to the drying hot water for a short amount of time. Also, think about switching to a dandruff or dry scalp shampoo during the winter to protect your hair and your scalp. Tea tree oil is a great natural treatment for a dry, itchy scalp. Apply 10-15 drops to a regular bottle of shampoo. When shampooing hair, leave the mixed shampoo on your head for 10 minutes before rinsing and conditioning.  These are great tips for healthy hair.

3) Rough Hair

Our hair needs a little extra care during the winter to help prevent dryness and breakage. When we shampoo our hair, it strips the moisture from both the scalp and the hair. This is more of an issue during the wintertime as the weather conditions are contributing to this dryness. As such, it’s recommended that you wash your hair every other day to give your scalp some time to replenish its natural oils. Tips for healthy hair: To prevent breakage and other damage, avoid blow-drying and brushing hair when it’s wet because hair is most delicate when it is full of water. If your hair is really dry, try combing hair with a few drops of olive oil or coconut oil and a wide-tooth comb after showering.

4) Static-y Hair

Nothing’s worse than a head of hair that’s full of fly-aways and static. When your scalp is dry, it produces fewer oils which then makes prone to static. Rub a bit of your favorite oil into your hair to help weigh it down and counteract the electricity. If no oil is available, your favorite lotion will also do the trick. Just rub a small amount on your hands first then smooth it on your hair. If static is becoming a major problem, consider changing your routine. Brush your hair using a brush with natural bristles that help redistribute oils from the scalp to the ends of your hair. If a quick fix is all you need, run a dryer sheet over your hair before heading out the door.

5) Moisturizing Dry Hair

Keep your hair hydrated by using regular deep conditioning or oil based treatments.  Try a deep conditioning treatment at home or at the salon at least once a week to replenish lost moisture. Look for one that is appropriate for your hair type and overall hair condition. For extra moisture, leave the deep conditioning treatment on overnight and rinse it out in the morning. During the week, use a moisturizer on your hair – just like you would on your skin. A water based moisturizing conditioner or cream is necessary to ensure your hair is getting the relief it needs.  Make sure you apply these tips for healthy hair daily.

6) Regular Trims

Going to get your hair trimmed every six to eight weeks ensures your hair is at its best and reduces the chances of dry, split ends. It also helps to prevent breakage from moving up the hair shaft and causing more damaged hair later on.

7) Humidifier

While it may not directly impact the look and health of your hair, a humidifier is a great way to keep your hair (and skin) from looking and feeling dry in the winter. A humidifier helps to add moisture to dry, indoor air.  This is one of the least known tips for healthy hair.

8) Washing and Drying

As I mentioned before, try to keep hair washing to a minimum and wash once every two days to prevent your hair from drying out. Use a moisture based shampoo and conditioner to add more moisture to your hair during the winter months. Avoid any shampoo that contains sulfates as they can strip the hair color and leave hair looking dull. A sulfate free shampoo will ensure your color stays its brightest all winter long. Remember to make sure your hair is completely dry before you leave the house as cold, dry temperatures add unwanted frizz to your wet hair. This is especially important if you live in a very cold climate because your hair can actually freeze and break if you go outside with wet hair. Allow your hair to air dry to retain your hair’s natural moisture and avoid using blow-dryers, curling irons and straighteners.  These tools tend to suck the moisture out of your hair and can lead to dry, brittle strands. Dry shampoo is also a great way to extend your time in between showers.

9) Brushing your Hair

Try to avoid over brushing your hair in the winter, and remember to always brush your hair dry and not wet. Brushing wet hair, especially right after your shower, will stretch your strands and cause breakage. If you do need to brush your hair while it’s wet, remember towel dry your hair first and apply a leave-in conditioning treatment to protect strands from damage. Don’t pull excessively on hair, instead, use short strokes and work your way up from the ends of your hair. If you have thick hair, you can do this in two-cycles, once with a large wide-tooth comb and then again with a fine tooth comb with more teeth.

10) Tangled Hair

Winter wind can quickly whip hair into a tangled mess. After each wash, try using a leave-in conditioner to build stronger hair and help keep tangles under control. Another reason your hair gets tangled and knotty during the winter months is because it gets tangled up in your coat and scarf. When styling your hair, think about your outfit and whether you’re going to be wearing a scarf or a high neck sweater. Before you put on your coat and scarf, braid or put the section of hair at the nape of your neck into a ponytail. This keeps it from getting loose and weaving itself into knots as you walk. Or try a stylish winter hat to keep your locks protected from the cold winter wind.

11) Nutrition

Great hair starts from the inside out. Unlike most hair care products, Hairfinity hair growth vitamins works from the inside out giving your hair the nutrients it needs to look its healthiest.
