What You Need to Know About Hot Oil Treatments

Hot oil treatments aren’t only for dry hair; they can also help with issues like dry scalp and dandruff. It’s easy enough to mix your own oil blend at home, but there are many commercial varieties that are inexpensive and simple to use right out of the package.

What You Need to Know About Hot Oil Treatments

Who Needs a Hot Oil Treatment?

Almost everyone can reap the benefits of a hot oil treatment. Unless you know your hair and scalp don’t react well to oil, or your scalp is naturally very oily, doing this once or twice a month will probably prove beneficial. If your hair is feeling very dry and brittle, then a hot oil mix should revitalize your mane. If dandruff is a problem, not all oils will alleviate it, but coconut oil is a great choice for helping with this issue. Likewise, a tight, itchy scalp can be relieved with the right oil selection, so dry scalp sufferers may want to look for commercial products containing emollient ingredients like jojoba.

How to Apply Hot Oil

Despite the name, you shouldn’t apply hot oil.  Instead, it should be warm; you don’t want to burn yourself! There are a couple of ways to warm up your oil. You can use the microwave oven: place your oil in a microwave-safe bowl and heat it up for 10-30 seconds, depending on the amount. Make sure it’s not hot when you apply it.  You can also place an oil packet into a cup or bowl of hot (not boiling) water, and let it sit for one or two minutes before applying.  Place the warm oil onto dampened hair, work it completely through and then cover with a plastic cap. Leave it on from half an hour to overnight.  Then you rinse it out, shampoo and condition.

Why Do I Shampoo After a Hot Oil Treatment?

Some people wonder why a shampoo is necessary after this treatment because it seems to wash away the oily benefits. When you cleanse and condition post-hot oil, this is mainly to rinse away the excess oil, which can weigh down your hair if left on. A brief cleanse with HAIRFINITY Gentle Cleanse Shampoo is the best way to wash away most of the oil without stripping it all away.
